Crestwood achieved its best academic results ever by meeting 26 of the 30 indicators on the 2008-2009 Ohio Local Report Card, three more than last year. In most grade levels and subject areas an indicator is achieved when 75% of the students test proficient or above.
District Performance Index Continues to Climb
Crestwood had its highest “performance index” ever achieving a score of 97.4. The performance index is based on a mathematical formula that gives added “weight” to students who test “accelerated’ or “advanced.” A performance index of 100 brings an overall rating of excellent. More than 46% of Crestwood’s students achieved accelerated or advanced scores.
Crestwood’s performance index has increased steadily over time. Our rate of improvement has also outpaced general improvement throughout the state and the positive gap between Crestwood and state averages has widened.
Crestwood High School
CHS received a rating of Excellent meeting all 12 indicators and achieving a performance index of 102. More than 77% of tenth grade students were proficient on all five of the Ohio Graduation Tests. Our students’ average ACT score of 22 was tied for second in Portage County. This was the fifth consecutive excellent rating.
Crestwood Middle School
CMS met 6 of 9 indicators and was rated Excellent due to the strength of improvement rates that exceeded federal and state expectations. It had a performance index of 94.2. Scores in 6th grade reading and 8th grade social studies were the highest in the history of the district and were among the very highest in Portage County. This was the second consecutive rating of excellent for CMS.
Crestwood Intermediate School
CIS met 7 of 8 state standards and had its highest performance index ever at 97.4 to gain an Effective rating. Fifth grade math scores jumped 18% (from 59.5% to 77.5%), third best in Portage County. Four of the five tested areas in fifth grade were in the top three in all of Portage County.
Crestwood Primary School
Since no state tests are given in grades K-2, Crestwood Primary School is automatically assigned the same rating as Crestwood Intermediate School as the “feeder” school. Instruction in math and reading at CPS form the foundation for students who are then tested in the intermediate grades.
I would like to congratulate Crestwood’s students, teachers, instructional aides, tutors, and administrators for their efforts and these achievements. Our ultimate goal on the Local Report Cards is, of course, to achieve a district rating of Excellent.
I would also like to compliment the work and efforts of teachers whose efforts are not measured in the state testing system. This includes music, art, health, physical education, athletics and many other subjects and extra-curricular areas. Our excellence in these areas is well- known even though they are not acknowledged on the state report card.
Related Academic Initiatives
Crestwood is establishing three key initiatives this year designed to continue our academic growth. These include:
- Implementing a new software based system to track student progress in math and reading more effectively
- Training staff in more effective use of student data to target instruction to individual needs using the software system referred to above
- Implementing Project lead the Way at Crestwood High School to increase the rigor for even the highest achieving students.
Look for updates on these initiatives in Crestwood Comments throughout the year.
