 Earth Day Celebration 2014

The Crestwood Outdoor education Committee is proud to present our 10th Annual Earth Day Celebration on April 25th from 4:30-6:30 at the Bowen Road  Crestwood Elementary School Campus.  Dinner is available for purchase.

There are a wide variety of hands on and informational stations for your child to visit and projects to be completed.  Earth day is totally free for the children and always a family favorite.  Please plan to attend.  A great deal of hard work, time and dedication goes into planning and implementing this event.  We hope everyone can attend.  There will be a very small remaining number of Earth Day shirts available for purchase of $10.00.

The Crestwood Local School District currently has to make up four calamity days. The Crestwood Board of Education, last evening, passed a resolution to utilize Blizzard Bags to help offset school days missed this past winter.  Blizzard Bags are an option provided by the Ohio Department of Education for school districts to help make up as many as three instructional days during a school year. With the use of Blizzard Bags, the Crestwood Local Schools will only have to make up one day at the end of this school year.

Blizzard Bags are online or take-home lessons that students complete to make up a missed day of school. Assignments will be available online on our individual schools’ websites or as “take home” hard copy assignments for your child to complete beginning Monday, April 14.  Assignments are due two weeks after they are assigned.  For example, the first assignments will be due two weeks from Monday, April 14 which is Friday, April 25.   The second assignments will be assigned Monday, April 28 and will be due Friday, May 9.  The third assignments will be assigned Monday, May 12 and will be due Friday, May 23.

If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher or the Principal of your child’s school. We hope that the use of Blizzard Bags will be beneficial to your child’s education and success.

Since one additional day must be added at the end of the year, the last day of school for Crestwood students will now be June 6, 2014.

Calamity Day Make Up Days

Dear Parent/Guardian:

It has certainly been a challenging winter and I am sure everyone is ready for some sun! The Ohio Legislature approved HB 416 on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, revising the calamity day requirements for Ohio School Districts. An explanation of the legislative changes is as follows:

  •  Ohio Revised Code still grants a waiver to school districts for the first five (5) calamity days used in a school year. Consider these as days 1-5.
  • The Legislature modified the requirement to make up days beyond the first five days. Districts are now required to make up the next four (4) days using several options including: the district’s already approved contingency days; blizzard bags (maximum of three (3) days); additional time added to the school day in one-half hour increments, or; a combination of these methods. Consider these as days 6-9.
  • The Legislature then granted a one-time waiver of the requirement to make up the next four (4) days. Consider these as days 10-13.
  •  Finally, districts are required to make up any days missed after that point. Consider these as days 14 and beyond.
  • The bill also gives permission for local school boards to excuse graduating 12th-grade students from attending any days they would otherwise be required to attend as a result of calamity days after the district’s scheduled graduation ceremony in the 2013-2014 school year

Terracycle - Outsmart Waste

In an effort to engage students in small environmental initiatives that can have a big impact, Crestwood Middle School is participating in the Terracycle Packaging Brigade.

TerraCycle (www.terracycle.com) is creating national recycling systems for previously non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle waste.  Their goal is to eliminate the idea of waset by creating collection and solution systems for anything that today must be sent to a landfill.

CMS asks that you please help your child collect the following:

Any brand of flexible cheese packaging

Any brand of tooth care product packaging

Any brand of drink pouch

THANK YOU!

To Crestwood staff, students, friends and families -

We cannot thank everyone enough.  We can feel the hugs from our community and beyond.  Kylee's strength and spirit amazes me daily and we owe a lot of that to the support we are receiving from all of you.  Everyone she has known in her life has reached out to her in some way.

We are now heading down a road I never imagined we would be on just days ago.  With the love that surrounds us I know we can provide Kylee with what she needs to complete her journey.

We would like to express extreme gratitude to those leading fundraisers in Kylee's name: Beth and Laney Velek for the “Kisses for Kylee” shirts, Terry and Laurie McHone for the fast pitch raffle, the Sara family for making bracelets, CMS PTO for hosting a dance and Lauren Barrios for creating “Kylee's Prosthetic Journey” website.

We would also like to send a special thank you to Kelly Cole, Dave Ivory, and all of our wonderful friends for providing us with lovely dinners each night.  This was not only extremely thoughtful, but also very helpful.

And, of course, to our incredible family who has been there for us every step of the way.  We have an incredible support system and for that we are so very grateful.

Greg, Lisa, Clay and Kylee Reid

Power of the Pen District Tournament 1st Place Team

Once again Crestwood Power of the Pen students proved their power by winning nine awards and an honorable mention on Saturday at the District Tournament held at James A. Garfield Middle School.  Placing first, above fifty-five other 7th graders competing from nine other schools, our very own Amelia Wysong also earned a Best of Round Award and a Best of Round Honorable Mention.

Scoring the highest possible rank points for all three rounds of writing, 8th grader Katie Fosnight won first place and two of the three possible Best of Round Awards.  The entire 8th grade team took first place among nine other schools from Summit and Portage counties.  Sara Miller continued Crestwood’s triumph by placing second.  Competing against sixty other 8th graders, Zoe Catcott placed fourth and Lillian Bissell placed ninth.

Crestwood students continued to shine throughout the entire day as many of our alternates volunteered to help our host school who was in need of extra student “runners” thus playing an important role by assisting judges.

Congratulations again to all of our traveling team members for their wonderful contributions to Crestwood’s success.
