THE GOLLYWHOPPER GAMES PARENT LETTER
May 8, 2012
Dear Parents,
It is May and that means it is time again for One Book, One School at Crestwood Intermediate School. This year your sons and daughters will be reading Jody Feldman’s The Gollywhopper Games. Yes, Gollywhopper, it’s fun to say and our students will have a wonderful time reading along with you! We would like our fourth and fifth grade students to read to you or share what they have read with you each night. We would like you to read to our third graders. With that in mind, we will have pre-recorded chapters on the CIS homepage which you may access at www.crestwoodschools.org and then click on the Intermediate school on the right of the page. Chapter recordings will be deactivated at the end of each week.
Students received their books today during a very special Kickoff Assembly. Each book will have a bookplate designed by Madison Hoffman, one of our 5th grade students. Following is the author’s introduction from the back cover…

ARE YOU READY?
“Gil Goodson’s future happiness depends on winning the Golly Toy & Game Company’s ultimate competition. If Gil wins, his dad has promised that the family can move away from all the gossip, false friends, and bad press that have plagued them ever since The Incident. Inside the toy company’s fantastic headquarters, Gil will have to master trivia, solve puzzles, and complete physical stunts_
and he’ll have to do it better than all of the other kids competing.
Oh, and did we mention that Gil’s every step_
and every mistake_
will be broadcast on national television? Hold on tight, because the ride of his life is about to begin!”
In addition to the reading, our students will have another opportunity to give back again this year. One of our sponsors, The Vermont Teddy Bear Co. has agreed to offer a 14” bear called “Take Along Teddy” which will be sent to a child at The Akron Children’s Hospital. See the order form “Are you ready to put a smile on the face of a child?” Also, see our web page for Bear choices and additional order forms. All donations during the program will go toward the purchase of bears for the hospital. To allow for shipping turnaround,
Bear Orders are due by Friday, May 18th.

Friday, Dollar Hat Day students may wear a hat all day for a $1 donation.
Week Two
On Monday morning, May 14th our students will “Skype” with the author for about 45 minutes.
Tuesday, students will experience a Gollywhopper lunch, including Cotton Candy.
Friday, students will learn from Aaron Star about Game Design.
Week Three
Tuesday morning, students will experience the NED assembly. Never Give Up, Encourage Others, Do Your Best, complete with Yo-yos! This is a character education component in support of the book themes.
Mid-week, Research Challenge on the soccer field just like in the book! Winners announced at the final assembly.
Week Four
Maze and puzzle Challenge all week.
Friday, Carnival Day, complete with a Dunking Booth and a reluctant celebrity.
Tickets will be drawn and prizes awarded. Prizes include a Remote Controlled Blimp,
Teddy Bears, Rubik’s Cube, Chattering Teeth, Yo-yos, and more. You get the picture; the book is about a competition in a toy company!
